Cruiser and barge survey
As an essential part of the process of buying a canal or river boat, we strongly recommend buyers to instruct a surveyor to examine the boat. Such a survey is your only real guarantee against hidden defects. It is for the potential buyer, with the advice of the surveyor, to fix the content of the survey.
The following elements can be checked :
> Measurement of hull thickness by ultrasound
This survey is required every ten years for French-registered boats larger than 20 metres. It determines true thickness and identifies any weaknesses in the hull.
> Survey of engine
* Measurement of the compression of each cylinder
* Chemical analysis of engine oil
* Examination of wear parts
> Survey of transmission
> Review and measurement of the eletrical circuit
> Survey of steering system
> Safety device testing
> Check of the water circuit pressure and water discharges
After the survey, the surveyor will deliver his written and signed report. The report specifies two types of defects, with a different order of importante. Important defects are those who will need to be repaired in the short term to ensure the soundness and safety of the boat. Other defects are reported as "requiring attention" but do not affect the soundness and safety of the boat.
The choice of an independent surveyor is an important element in the purchase of a boat. The survey results will affect and work to be done on the boat by the seller or the buyer.
